Can you imagine an 18 year old girl just graduated from high school in 1933 interviewing and then be assigned to a country school in the very northeast corner of Dawson County? For those of you who are not familiar with this area, about the only thing out there is grassland, cattle and a few random farms. This was back in the day where phones were not even that plentiful. The roads were dirt and when it rained there were muddy ruts to drive through to get to school.
Blanche had finished her normal training and was ready to teach. Her parents lived somewhere north of Overton, so she lived at home and drove every day to District 94. Twenty-seven students are listed on her Teacher’s Daily Class Register for the school year 1933-1934. I do not have a lot of information because Blanche passed away six years ago and she never talked about her first teaching days. I know it was not an easy life driving to and from school every day over muddy roads and through snow storms in a Model A Roadster.
Blanche continued to teach in mostly rural schools for 25 years. Blanche married Floyd Carpenter in June of 1936 and left teaching to raise her son, Keith. Blanche resumed teaching in 1951. Keith and his wife, Eileen, attended UNK and both are active in establishing scholarships at UNK.
