Colleen Pfeiffer or as her students knew her as, “Miss Pfeiffer” was born in 1933. She had five brothers and one sister and grew up on a farm nine miles north of Amherst. She graduated from Amherst High School and then attended Kearney State Teachers College. In 1958, she started teaching at Watertown School District #101, the year I started kindergarten.
School started at 9:00 a.m. and got out at 4:00 p.m. I believe Miss Pfeiffer had 33 students grades K through 8th grade; plus she was a nurse, janitor, referee, etc., basically a mother to us all. God truly blessed us when Miss Pfeiffer came to our Watertown School. Every morning we would say the Pledge of Allegiance and raised the American Flag.
We all knew how to fold the flag the correct way and never let it touch the ground. We sang patriotic songs, square danced and that was our music class.
Miss Pfeiffer was a very gifted woman and she had to be to keep us busy and out of trouble. Oh yes, through the years a few of the students had to sit in the corner by the crank telephone and later a dial telephone because they got caught by Miss Pfeiffer not doing their work. Miss Pfeiffer didn’t yell or hit students. She would just say your name in a soft voice and then stare at you. I remember she said my name once and I’m sure it was only once, ha! I just melted. She had that look like you had better listen to me. My mom and dad had to spank me to get my attention, but not Miss Pfeiffer.
Miss Pfeiffer did have a weakness though – snakes. I remember playing outside during lunch break. I heard a loud scream and saw Miss Pfeiffer come running out of the girls outhouse screaming, “There’s a snake in there!” Another day I recall a bull snake arrived on our ball field so she got in her car and ran over it a few times so it would leave
us alone. What a teacher!
I could go on and on about “Miss Pfeiffer” but as I said in the beginning, God truly blessed us all as she was one of those teachers who truly cared about us and we adored her too. She was my teacher from Kindergarten through the 6th grade and taught me a lot about God, country and family! She taught me about being honest, playing fair and helping others. May God continue to bless you “Miss Pfeiffer” and from all of us students at Watertown School District #101 – “Thank You!”
