Marguerite E. Welch was born June 25, 1912, at Ansley, Nebraska, the daughter of Horace and Millie Evenson Welch. The family moved to Ravenna where her father worked for the railroad. She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1929.
Marguerite pursued and completed Normal training for teachers at Ravenna High. She earned a lifetime teaching certificate from the state of Nebraska. She taught in Buffalo County rural schools for eleven years from 1929-1940. The rural districts were #43, #60, #62, #106, and #107. She then taught in Ravenna public school district #69 from 1943-1967 for 24 years. In 1967 Marguerite was employed by the Grand Island public schools district #2 as a classroom teacher for four years, 1967-1971, before retiring from the profession.
While teaching full time, she took night and summer classes at Kearney State College to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree. Her entire life was devoted to the education of young children, spending 39 years in education.
Marguerite taught her niece, Roberta (Irwin) Wilke, in the 2nd grade at Ravenna elementary school. She often let Roberts accompany her to the classroom to help with menial tasks. Roberta credits her aunt for encouraging her to become a teacher too. She was always very supportive of her niece’s college educational goals and served as a lifelong mentor as well.
Marguerite passed away October 23, 1972, in Grand Island, Nebraska. She is buried in the Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna. Countless students had Miss Welch for 2nd grade and she truly was a dedicated teacher!
