Ploma was born Aug. 22, 1928 in Sargent, Nebraska, to William and Emma (Janesofsky) Weinman. After the death of her mother when Ploma was 13, she lived outside the home while attending Arnold High School, where she graduated in 1945. Ploma continued her education at Kearney State College (UNK), earning her bachelor’s degree in 1966 and master’s degree in 1972.
She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse, signing her first contract at the age of 16. She questioned her career choice after the start of her first school year and was quickly reminded that “she had signed a contract.” Future challenging students would eventually become brothers-in-law. Parents of her students would thank her for instilling responsibility to help with work at home in addition to the education that they received.
Ploma spent the last 25 years of her career teaching second grade at Wilcox Public School, retiring in 1993. She valued education, being self-sufficient, and family. The students that benefited the most were her children and grandchildren. On behalf of many, thanks Mom.
