Roma
Sukovaty graduated from Fairbury High School at 17 and started classes at
Fairbury Junior College. She took courses during the summer and was hired to
teach that fall at Meridian School District #10 in Jefferson County for $2,170.
She had a small group of students but most grades were represented, so she used
her older students to work with the younger ones while she worked with
different classes. She enjoyed teaching in this setting and taught at District
#10 for three years. She then was hired to teach at the Bower District #16 in
Jefferson County. She taught the school year of 1958-1959 at Bower.She married Larry in the fall of 1959 and began teaching in public schools in Cedar Bluffs and Silver Creek. She taught fourth grade until 1966 when her first son was born. She then had two more sons and stayed home raising the boys until they were all in school. She was then ready to get back into education. She applied for and was hired to teach at Riverside School District #28 in Polk County near Silver Creek. Here she taught grades Kindergarten through sixth grade from 1978 until 1986. She thoroughly enjoyed these eight years and finished her teaching career as she started in a one-room school.
During the summers she attended the junior college taking hours toward her degree. She eventually finished her degree at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, graduating in 1969. She also attended classes at UNL and Kearney State to renew her teaching certificate.
